At 7:00 p.m. you can take part in an exciting affordable art auction. The art pieces are prints of famous artists and are tastefully framed. They range in price from $25 - $1,000. All of this fun will translate into $$ to aid this year's student participants in the Joliet Diocesan University Mission trip to Sucre, Bolivia, in June. The price of admission ($10) includes all of the above, and a free chance on a lovely piece of art. This will all be happening at St. Thomas the Apostle in Naperville. Festival of Faith
Come Back To Erin or just come back to St. Patrick's Church where we will celebrate our Irish heritage at a Mass on March 12 at 7:00 p.m. This annual event is sponsored by the Irish American Society of County Will and commemorates the gift of faith brought to this country by our ancestors. Father Kevin Shanley, O.Carm, will be the celebrant and homilist. Irish soda bread and tea will be served at the social hour following the Mass. Everyone is welcome.

The days and weeks of Lent are a time to assess the order in our lives, an opportunity to set right anything that may be amiss, by some positive action and virtue on our part.
No longer is there an obligation under pain of sin to fast. The negative emphasis that we gave in the past is now put in proper perspective. If we choose to fast, it is because we see it as a salutary means of doing penance, in a positive and beneficial way.
The encyclical, Rich in Mercy (November 30, 1980) of Pope John Paul II as well as his (March 3, 1979) establish basic priorities and goals for mankind today.
Pope John Paul's theological reflection brings God and His attitude toward mankind into the foreground. His reflections are particularly pertinent to this season of Lent. Using the scriptures as a starting point for meditating on the experiences of modern life, he leads us to the central fact of our Christian Life - The Paschal mysteries of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Lent is a time for restoring our ideals. All men and women have a longing for meaningfulness in their lives. Goals and values we must have and pursue energetically, otherwise we lose sight of our ultimate end -- our life in eternity with God.
Lent challenges us to face up to our shortcomings, and provides a new call, a new opportunity to put proper emphasis on the spiritual dimensions of life through prayer and salutary self-discipline or penance.
Lent calls us to conversion, invites us to rely on His mercy, so our Holy Father tells us. Reflecting on the words of Pope John Paul II teaches us to view Lent as a time leading us to conversion in the sense of re-establishing true priorities in our lives, and particularly the priority of God's mercy. In contrast to the impersonal and severe image of a judge, we wish to follow Jesus who came to reveal and proclaim the Father of mercy. This was the unique appeal of Jesus' life -- a proclamation of the mystery of God as the Father of mercies.
Our Lenten penance will enable us to do this as well in the smallest details of our daily lives. An appreciation of God's mercy will effect changes in our lives, and will enable us to experience the profound joy of conversion, a conversion rooted in prayer and virtuous penance.
May Jesus support your efforts this Lent.
God Bless,
Father Jim

President Bush Declares
National Sanctity of Life Day
Washington - President Bush pleased anti-abortion activists Tuesday by declaring a National Sanctity of Human Life Day. (Sunday, January 19, 2003) and pledging his administration’s commitment to "build a culture that respects life."
He heralded the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act he signed last year which amends the legal definition of "person", "human being", "child" and "individual" to include any fetus that survives an abortion procedure. He also underscored his administration’s efforts to champion "compassionate alternatives to abortions such as promoting maternity group homes, encouraging abstinence and adoption and passing parental-notification and waiting period laws.
He called unborn children "those without the voice and power to defend their own rights."
