Drawing strength

Faith Focus for the Week
How do I draw on Body of Christ to strengthen me in living out faith each day?

This coming weekend the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ or Corpus Christi.

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “the Body of Christ”? Is it the Eucharistic species, the consecrated bread? Is it the People of God? Both?

St. Paul talked about the Body of Christ as a way to express the reality of his own conversion experience: dying to sin and rising to new life in Christ. The image of “body” expresses the diversity, the interrelatedness and the unity of all believers — the Church.

During the Eucharistic Prayer at Mass, the priest asks God the Father to send the Holy Spirit upon the gifts of bread and wine so that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. The second part of the prayer invokes the Spirit again, asking that all who share in the Body and Blood of Christ be brought together in unity and become one body, one spirit in Christ. These two prayers reflect the insight of the early Church that by partaking in holy Communion we become what we eat: the Body of Christ. When we speak of the real presence of Christ in Eucharistic liturgy (the Mass), oftentimes we narrow it to the Eucharistic species. However, the Church teaches the fourfold presence of Christ in the Eucharist: Christ is present in the assembly (those participating in the Mass), in the person of the priest, in the Word of God (the Scripture readings), and in a special way in the bread and wine which become the Body and Blood of Christ.

How do you experience the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist?
