The annual Will County Back to School Fair will be held Thursday, August 5, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the University of St. Francis at 500 Wilcox Street in Joliet. The Fair will provide free essential health and human services to low-income families. Free school supplies will also be distributed. This year close to 5,000 people are expected to attend the fair.
"Last year we saw a 31% increase in the number of low-income families we were able to help at the fair, and this year, with the economy affecting so many people in Will County, we are expecting to help even more," said Andrea Bird, coordinator of the fair and supervisor at Catholic Charities' Daybreak Center. "For these families the fair is a one-stop shop for free physicals, immunizations, dental care, information on programs in the community and so much more. And at the end of the day, they walk away with the school supplies they need," said Bird. The fun-filled Back to School Fair features face painting, music, raffles, games and even haircuts! While the children are engaged in these activities, parents are invited to visit the booths to gather information and talk with representatives from nearly 50 local participating agencies.
Some of the agencies participating this year include Child Care Resource & Referral, Provena St. Joseph Medical Center, Silver Cross Hospital, the Will County Health Department, Illinois Early Intervention, and Joliet Junior College -Career Seekers. Information will also be provided regarding job training and employment opportunities, nutrition and health, affordable childcare, housing, , Head Start, crime and gang prevention, and more. Spanish speaking interpreters will also be available throughout the day.
Volunteers are also needed to help the day of the Fair. If you or someone you may know are interested in volunteering for this incredible community event, please contact Andrea Bird at Catholic Charities Daybreak Center at 815.774.4663.
