"Say it ain't so, Joe"

That's a quote from a very old movie where a young boy hears the news his favorite baseball player has accepted a bribe and sold out his team. Very disillusioning; sad story.

I'm going to tell you about an equally sad rumor floating around that simply "ain't so." When some knucklehead tells you St. Pat's school is only going to be here one more year, don't believe it. It "ain't so."

What "is so" is that we have our fate in our own hands. The Bishop has said three basic things which I'm going to paraphrase for you:

First of all, St. Pat's will do business as usual during the coming school year - no and's, if's or but's about it. It's going to be the same school next year it was this year; the wonderful school it has been for many decades. The same St. Pat's we know and love.

Secondly, the Bishop said: Thanks for the report you sent, but would you mind adding a little more detail as to how you plan to increase your enrollment, pay your debt, and keep from falling back into debt again? Our response: "Yes we'll be glad to do that, Bishop Sartain. The 2020 Committee is working on a report right now, and you'll have it in your hands shortly."

Thirdly, the Bishop told us he'd evaluate our progress next spring and if we are doing well, i.e. doing the things we promised we would do, the Bishop will be very proud of our efforts. If we don't keep our word, of course, we can't really blame the Bishop; we'll need to look in the mirror, point directly at our own image and moan, "Say it ain't so, Joe."
